Bridport Prize for Poetry 2011
Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, judged the 2011 Bridport poetry prize.
Of 'Endowments', the winning poem by Terry Jones, she said:
"[The poem] always entranced with its beautiful litany of images for ageing, it balance between love poem and elegy; and yet managed to sign off audaciously with a last line laugh."
Prizegiving Lunch
Centre director Polly Gifford welcomed guests to the prizegiving lunch with an opportunity to hear extracts from the winning works and what the judges had to say. Guests included Bridport Prize patron Fay Weldon as well as Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and writer A L Kennedy, who were both judges.
Mrs Weldon said it was a great pleasure and an honour to be a patron.
She said: “It’s a wonderful prize and has been going a long time. It has an enormous prestige in the outside world and in the academic and poetry world.”
'Endowments' is published in the Bridport Anthology, Winners 2011, and is now entered to the Forward prize.
